DNA testing to check if male or female.

I guess its the age old question when buying young high class Koi. Male or Female?

I have just recieved some sample packs to actually test a Koi's sex by DNA. Could be a very good service depending on costs. I think it could be used the world over.

I have about 3000 tosai arriving this week ranging from 4". I will keep 6 random examples back and take the DNA tests from them and then keep them and grow them out until they are of a size I could check myself. Will be interesting to see the results. Its also quite easy to do, causes the fish hardly any problems at all. A quick simple rub around the inside of the mouth and away we go. I will post how I get on.

Re: Is it male or female?

Hi Tim
Is this something available to the hobbyist? I remember buying 6 tosai a few years back and I remember being told they were definitely female. Not one was!
