Good news for Waterlife pond product customers

It is unusual (particularly in the current business climate) for manufacturers to reduce prices. Most companies have to continually increase their prices. However, Waterlife are firm believers in spreading the benefits of cost reductions when they are able to. Recently Waterlife has managed to make savings in component costs and has improved productivity through the purchase of new manufacturing machinery. These changes have enabled Waterlife to lower the prices of a large part of their pond range.
You can expect to see reduced prices in stores over the next few months as shops re-stock. These reductions will make Waterlife products even more competitive on the shelf and Waterlife feel sure their customers will welcome these positive changes.
For more information on Waterlife pond products, go to: www.waterlife.co.uk.
The Roto Concept has landed!

The Roto™Concept Gravity Shower™ is of a truly unique design, and by using the latest British manufacturing techniques to produce each Roto™Concept Gravity Shower™, every koi keeper can now benefit from this advanced new concept.
The Roto™Concept Gravity Shower™ with patent pending features has been designed with the serious koi keeper in mind. The unique Roto™Gravity Shower Flow Valve™ system allows for the Roto™Concept Gravity Shower™ to be installed gravity fed, unlike all other showers on the market which are pump fed only. This gives koi keepers, for the first time, the ability to install a shower filter out of sight as if it were any regular gravity fed filter.

At the end of May each year we make our final decision about which koi we will be growing on over the summer in the mud ponds and which will be transferred to our sales tanks. It’s a tough decision and it’s often a fine line between whether to grow a particular koi on in our mud ponds for a further season or whether to make it available for sale.

NT Labs’ already comprehensive koi care range has a new addition – Koi Care Flukasol. As most koi keepers are well aware, flukes are one of the most persistent of ecto-parasites causing stress and irritation to your koi. Treating flukes can be difficult and costly. Weighing powders accurately and trying to dissolve powdered medications can be awkward at the best of times, but not any more.
Of course, every pond owner would love to be able to add just one algaecide to their pond which would solve all algae problems for the whole year. But almost every pond enthusiast has found that this approach simply does not work. JBL has now developed a three-step concept, tested by scientists, for ponds to function permanently without algae problems.
Cleaning is a blast with new Hozelock pressure washers

The winter has left many paths, driveways, patios and decking dirty and dangerously slippery with moss, mould and mildew so it’s time for a thorough clean-up. This is when a pressure washer with its powerful cleaning ability is worth its weight in gold – so a feature-rich new range from garden watering and pump specialists Hozelock, at prices which start from under £60 (available from all branches of B&Q), is worth a look.
The new, easy-to-use Compact Pressure Washer 100, High Pressure Washer 130 and Heavy Duty Pressure Washer 150 will take all the hard work out of onerous outdoor cleaning jobs. Surprisingly, given their cleaning power, the new Hozelock pressure washers use up to 60% less water than a hosepipe* thanks to a built-in pump which pressurises the restricted flow into a focused jet which can quickly remove dirt, moss, fungal growth and even weeds from hard landscaped areas.
Neither water nor power is wasted as these machines all feature Hozelock’s Total Stop System which effectively puts the pressure washer into standby mode whenever the gun trigger is released. The motor responds to dynamic pressure and restarts automatically when the trigger is depressed again.
For extra cleaning efficiency each model includes a detergent dispenser and comes with interchangeable variable spray turbo and rotary lances to provide the most effective spray pattern and intensity for different sizes of work area and for a wide variety of cleaning tasks.
The Hozelock Compact Pressure Washer 100 model (£59.98, B&Q) is a small, lightweight (7kg) machine with a 1200w motor, 100 bar maximum pressure and a flow rate of six litres per minute – making it ideal for cleaning small patios, paths, steps, tools, lawnmowers, barbecues, garden furniture, rubbish bins and similar tasks.
For larger cleaning jobs, the Hozelock High Pressure Washer 130 model (£89.98, B&Q) has a powerful 1700w motor giving 130 bar

South Coast Koi had a show and grow going on all summer with some small 4” Chagoi that were bought from the shop back in April. The idea was to start small – the Chagoi cost £3.00 each and most people bought five each. They had until October 4 to grow them a large as they could. There was a prize and trophy for whoever had the biggest fish by the day of the competition.

Superbead Filters from SKS

One of the most overlooked factors that contribute to the pollution of a koi pond is the level of suspended solids. These are small particles of food waste, faeces and algae which contribute to a build-up of pollution in your pond. A build up of suspended solids in the system will, over time, encourage nasty bacteria, a higher ammonia level and lower oxygen (O2) content.

Seasonal Disease Prevention

It is true to say that fish can develop disease at any time. However pathogens and parasites are perhaps at their most active and or dangerous in spring and, to a lesser extent, in autumn. These times of the year also coincide with the fish's immune system being at a low ebb, further increasing the risk of fish health problems.
For these reasons, Waterlife recommends the vigilant pond keeper to treat their pond first with Medizin P. Medizin P is a broad spectrum treatment which eradicates most fast killing protozoa parasites as well as treating fungus.
After a ten-day elapsement period, Waterlife then recommends treating the pond with Sterazin P for flukes and worms.
Using the products in this way will help to ease the fish through these potentially difficult months and give them the greatest start for the season ahead.
Medizin P and Sterazin P are available in the following sizes and prices: 125ml RRP £6.99, 500ml RRP £17.99 and 1 litre £27.99.
Further details on these products can be found at: http://www.waterlife.co.uk/waterlife/medizinp-sterazinp.htm or by contacting Waterlife on tel: 01753 685696.

MediKoi Wheatgerm with Garlic is a reduced protein maintenance food with garlic for protection from fish parasites over cooler months. The addition of garlic diffuses through the skin of the fish and any parasites which may be present react to these compounds by swimming away, reducing the risk of infestation.

Autumn is the time of year when every koi farm is busy harvesting their mud ponds and Cuttlebrook Koi Farm is no exception. Earlier in September our larger koi, two years and older, were harvested – a few were chosen to grow on over winter in our heated growing on facility, but most were transferred into sales tanks which makes this a great time to choose new fish.

The Sludge Terminator offers a complete solution for removing sludge in ponds. It consists of a self-priming waste water pump with a flexible rubber impeller on a stainless steel trolley that sucks the water in through a special stone separator. In this separator, heavier solids like substrate and stones will settle in the lower part to protect the pump.

It’s that time of year again – harvest time. Can you believe it’s come round so quickly? As most of you will know every year we invite dealers to send us photos of the newly harvested koi that are available for sale so that we can showcase them in the magazine. This is a valuable marketing tool for every dealer that takes part and is a great way for potential customers to see what koi are on offer – and to see the quality of the koi that are available.

Two New Tools for Tetra Website

Tetra, the leading global supplier of fish foods, treatments and equipment, has added two new tools to the ‘Help & Advice’ section of its website. The first is a Dosage Calculator which will work out exactly how much Tetra product you need to add to your aquarium. The second is an eBook tool which allows you to flick through the Tetra information brochures like you would a book.
Rupert Bridges, Product Manager at Tetra UK adds: “These are two great new tools that will make fish-keeping even easier. Ensuring the exact dosage of product plays a vital role in keeping water clean and fish healthy, but working out the right dose isn’t always easy. Our dosage calculator is designed for both aquarium and pond keepers and will help ensure they get the best results from our products.
eBooks, on the other hand, is a tool many people these days are familiar with so it now means that our information leaflets are easier to use and are more accessible than ever before. We hope that both of these new tools will go a considerable way to making fish-keeping even easier and more enjoyable.”

However the difference with Toipponds is that because of our unique relationship with Purdin Koi in the USA, we can prove it.

Tategoi Sanke Grow and Show

Absolute Koi, in association with Shintaro Koi Farm, are pleased to announce we will be having a Shintaro Tategoi Grow and Show competition for the 2009 Season. Shintaro is known by many koi keepers as ‘The maker of Dreams’ and is arguably one of the best breeders in Japan.
Although the Shintaro lineage nowadays has a lot of unique features, the Matsunosuke roots remain clearly visible, these Tategoi Sanke are already 35-40cm.
From more than 1.5 million koi that are born at Shintaro Koi Farm, more than 99% are considered no good and eliminated. In the end only 4500 of the 1.5 million fry will pass the culling process. Only 150 of them should be regarded as Tategoi.
This is a real opportunity for the UK koi keeper to own such a breathtaking Shintaro Tategoi Sanke.

Here are the details:
Absolute Koi have 30 Shintaro Tategoi Sanke Tosai bought whilst out in Japan in early April 2009. The price for each will be only £395.00 and you can buy as many as you want. For each one that you buy your name will be put into a hat. All the names will be pulled randomly and you will pick from the selection in the order your name is pulled. Obviously, the more you buy the better chance you’ll get of having a higher pick.
The date of the selection will be announced soon, where a marquee, barbeque, raffle and many other koi will be on show along with reps from leading manufacturers of koi products – a day not to be missed.

So who does the judging?
Well, we thought the best judge for this would be Shintaro Koi Farm. After one year, a winner will be announced based on photos. The judging will be done by Masaru Saito (Shintaro) who incidentally helped pick the 30 Tategoi Sanke for this competition. The Grand Champion will be based on a combination of things and not just whichever is the largest.

The prize for Grand Champion
The lucky winner
