Do you hate that job of cleaning out your pond or aquarium when it goes all green and slimy? Why not save time and keep it fresh and clean with a FRESHA-Tank disc? Just pop one in your fish tank and it will help destroy fungal, viral and bacterial micro-organisms and parasites (in the reproductive stage).

Normally we would leave koi of this level in Japan until sold, but we are so pleased with them that we have had the most special ones shipped back to our ponds in Bristol.

South Coast Koi had a show and grow going on all summer with some small 4” Chagoi that were bought from the shop back in April. The idea was to start small – the Chagoi cost £3.00 each and most people bought five each. They had until October 4 to grow them a large as they could. There was a prize and trophy for whoever had the biggest fish by the day of the competition.

Superbead Filters from SKS

One of the most overlooked factors that contribute to the pollution of a koi pond is the level of suspended solids. These are small particles of food waste, faeces and algae which contribute to a build-up of pollution in your pond. A build up of suspended solids in the system will, over time, encourage nasty bacteria, a higher ammonia level and lower oxygen (O2) content.

Seasonal Disease Prevention

It is true to say that fish can develop disease at any time. However pathogens and parasites are perhaps at their most active and or dangerous in spring and, to a lesser extent, in autumn. These times of the year also coincide with the fish's immune system being at a low ebb, further increasing the risk of fish health problems.
For these reasons, Waterlife recommends the vigilant pond keeper to treat their pond first with Medizin P. Medizin P is a broad spectrum treatment which eradicates most fast killing protozoa parasites as well as treating fungus.
After a ten-day elapsement period, Waterlife then recommends treating the pond with Sterazin P for flukes and worms.
Using the products in this way will help to ease the fish through these potentially difficult months and give them the greatest start for the season ahead.
Medizin P and Sterazin P are available in the following sizes and prices: 125ml RRP £6.99, 500ml RRP £17.99 and 1 litre £27.99.
Further details on these products can be found at: http://www.waterlife.co.uk/waterlife/medizinp-sterazinp.htm or by contacting Waterlife on tel: 01753 685696.

MediKoi Wheatgerm with Garlic is a reduced protein maintenance food with garlic for protection from fish parasites over cooler months. The addition of garlic diffuses through the skin of the fish and any parasites which may be present react to these compounds by swimming away, reducing the risk of infestation.

Autumn is the time of year when every koi farm is busy harvesting their mud ponds and Cuttlebrook Koi Farm is no exception. Earlier in September our larger koi, two years and older, were harvested – a few were chosen to grow on over winter in our heated growing on facility, but most were transferred into sales tanks which makes this a great time to choose new fish.

In this separator, heavier solids like substrate and stones will settle in the lower part to protect the pump.

It’s that time of year again – harvest time. Can you believe it’s come round so quickly? As most of you will know every year we invite dealers to send us photos of the newly harvested koi that are available for sale so that we can showcase them in the magazine. This is a valuable marketing tool for every dealer that takes part and is a great way for potential customers to see what koi are on offer – and to see the quality of the koi that are available.

Two New Tools for Tetra Website

Tetra, the leading global supplier of fish foods, treatments and equipment, has added two new tools to the ‘Help & Advice’ section of its website. The first is a Dosage Calculator which will work out exactly how much Tetra product you need to add to your aquarium. The second is an eBook tool which allows you to flick through the Tetra information brochures like you would a book.
Rupert Bridges, Product Manager at Tetra UK adds: “These are two great new tools that will make fish-keeping even easier. Ensuring the exact dosage of product plays a vital role in keeping water clean and fish healthy, but working out the right dose isn’t always easy. Our dosage calculator is designed for both aquarium and pond keepers and will help ensure they get the best results from our products.
eBooks, on the other hand, is a tool many people these days are familiar with so it now means that our information leaflets are easier to use and are more accessible than ever before. We hope that both of these new tools will go a considerable way to making fish-keeping even easier and more enjoyable.”

Ozone Redox UVC from Aquaforte

The Ozone Redox UVC has a special 75watt T5 UV-C lamp that generates ozone as well as UV-C at the same time. The low pressure version (pictured) comes with an air pump that ‘pushes’ the ozone out of the unit and a ‘static mixer’ that mixes the ozone with water with virtually no pressure loss.

Tategoi Sanke Grow and Show

Absolute Koi, in association with Shintaro Koi Farm, are pleased to announce we will be having a Shintaro Tategoi Grow and Show competition for the 2009 Season. Shintaro is known by many koi keepers as ‘The maker of Dreams’ and is arguably one of the best breeders in Japan.
Although the Shintaro lineage nowadays has a lot of unique features, the Matsunosuke roots remain clearly visible, these Tategoi Sanke are already 35-40cm.
From more than 1.5 million koi that are born at Shintaro Koi Farm, more than 99% are considered no good and eliminated. In the end only 4500 of the 1.5 million fry will pass the culling process. Only 150 of them should be regarded as Tategoi.
This is a real opportunity for the UK koi keeper to own such a breathtaking Shintaro Tategoi Sanke.

Here are the details:
Absolute Koi have 30 Shintaro Tategoi Sanke Tosai bought whilst out in Japan in early April 2009. The price for each will be only £395.00 and you can buy as many as you want. For each one that you buy your name will be put into a hat. All the names will be pulled randomly and you will pick from the selection in the order your name is pulled. Obviously, the more you buy the better chance you’ll get of having a higher pick.
The date of the selection will be announced soon, where a marquee, barbeque, raffle and many other koi will be on show along with reps from leading manufacturers of koi products – a day not to be missed.

So who does the judging?
Well, we thought the best judge for this would be Shintaro Koi Farm. After one year, a winner will be announced based on photos. The judging will be done by Masaru Saito (Shintaro) who incidentally helped pick the 30 Tategoi Sanke for this competition. The Grand Champion will be based on a combination of things and not just whichever is the largest.

The prize for Grand Champion
The lucky winner
